Jaime de Angulo, "Shelter"

Grandfather, the sky is clouding over,
it’s going to rain, to storm!
let’s run home!
Slowly, grandchild, slowly.
Grandfather, let’s take shelter
under that redwood tree.
But the lightning might strike it.
Grandfather, grandfather! I’m scared!
the rain will drown us.
Crawl into my shirt, grandchild;
the sun will shine again.
Oh! Grandfather: the sun is out, the rain is over!
but the redwood tree fell! Grandfather,
what are those things you were sitting on?
Those are Coyote’s bones, grandchild;
the lightning never strikes over them.
